EVENT DESCRIPTION

Timeless Enchantment: Retelling Richard Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung in art, music movies and literature - and event series consisting of an exhibition, lectures, interactive workshops and performances which celebrate and investigate the various ways in which the story and music of Wagner's Ring cycle has continued to be used, retold and adapted in song, painting, theater, literature, movies, and comic books.

The exhibition segments include:
1. The Story of the Ring illustrated by Arthur Rackham (original edition, early 20th Century books and framed facsimile copies).
2. The Ring in performance: enlarged photographs (approx. 20) from different productions of the Ring from Wagner's own in 1876 (sets by Joseph Hoffman) through Alphonse Appia, Patrice Chereau and Robert Wilson, to the current Los Angeles staging by Achim Freyer.  Informative labels will explain both the artistic significance and historical context of the performances.
3. The Ring in visual arts: approximately 6 works variously inspired by Wagner's Ring: by the story (Albert Pinkham Ryder, Odillon Redon, Paul Klee); by the formal innovation (Paul Cezanne, Vasilly Kandinsky); by the symbolism (Georg Grosz, Anselm Kiefer).
