Description
In just over two decades of existence, LA Opera has become, under the leadership of Eli and Edythe Broad General Director Plácido Domingo, the United States' fourth largest opera company and now "stands out as a newly important force in American Opera." (Mark Swed, Los Angeles Times).
A renowned producer of works from the classical and contemporary repertoires, LA Opera’s production of Kurt Weill’s The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny under the baton of Richard Seaver Music Director James Conlon (released on DVD) was recognized in 2009 with two Grammy Awards, for “Best Opera Recording” and “Best Classical Recording.” The 2008/09 season marked the Company’s critically acclaimed unveiling of the first two installments – Das Rheingold and Die Walküre – of a new production of Wagner’s monumental four-opera Ring cycle directed and designed by Achim Freyer. The 2009/10 season will include new productions of the final two Ring operas – Siegfried and Die Götterdämmerung – as well as the presentation of three complete Ring cycles (May 29 through June 26, 2010).
