Description
Begun in 1948, Sundays Live is the longest-running live music broadcast in Los Angeles. Fifty Sundays of the year, professional musicians perform for one hour (6PM - 7PM) on the stage of the Leo S. Bing Theater, Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The series began its broadcast life in 1948 on radio station KFWB and later migrated to stations KFAC, KUSC, KMZT, and KCSN. These FREE programs are now available live via LACMA's streaming audio live on Sundays at 6 pm, or by delayed broadcast at noon on Wednesdays over radio station KCSN, 88.5 FM. Dennis Bade is host, and William Vestal serves as veteran Executive Producer. At least two generations of listeners, literally millions of people, of all ages, have been nurtured by Sundays Live since 1948. And now, with most schools no longer teaching music, Sundays Live is needed more than ever. Sundays Live is required attendance for many music appreciation courses in schools of higher learning in Southern California. Until now, these public concerts - with substantial in-kind contributions - have been funded by the City of Los Angeles' Department of Cultural Affairs. However, with severe budget deficits and imminent cuts, the city can no longer fully support this traditional free source of fine classical music. Since July 1, 2003, we have needed to secure non-governmental monies. The Friends of Sundays Live has been formed to help guarantee the future of these performances and their broadcasts. A primary task of the Friends is to provide a stable source of income through fundraising efforts: individual giving and underwriting by foundations, businesses and corporations.
