EVENT DESCRIPTION

"Mendelssohn! On Wings of Song": A staged reading featuring the music of Mendelssohn and Wagner and an original story and songs by Jacqueline Bassan. Richard Wagner is obssesed with silencing the music of his rival, Felix Mendelssohn. Wagner claims that since he is a Jew, Mendelssohn's music lacks "heart and soul." But German audiences love Mendelssohn's music, which drives Wagner insane with jealousy. At the wedding of his beautiful daughter, Elsie, Wagner chooses his own "Bridal Chorus" to walk his daughter down the aisle. Elsie (who secretly loves Felix) surprises her father and chooses Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" as her recessional. Ironically, the two rivals' music is "joined together in holy matrimony" in weddings the world over for eternity. When Felix is forced to convert in order to be accepted to music school, he sings the poignant, "I Kept My Name" - the song is a metaphor for holding onto one's roots, against all odds. In "On Wings of Song," the colorful classical music world is the backdrop for such universal themes as forbidden love and the freedom to express one's art without fear of censorship. Most notably, Wagner's words and music became the bitter prelude to the Holocaust .
