EVENT DESCRIPTION

The Ring Cycle: Re-Mixed: In conjunction with the L.A. Opera, HeArt Project teenagers will interpret Richard Wagner’s challenging 15-hour opera “Der Ring des Nibelungen,” also known as the Ring cycle. How can contemporary youth culture and new technologies re-imagine Wagner’s vision in the 21st century? Can 21st century innovation and technology illuminate connections to the grand visions of the past? Can the epic struggles of ancient myth be re-configured for an accelerated globalized culture? Guided by professional artists, our students will reflect on concepts of innovation, technology and grand visions. HeArt Project students will contribute their voices to the citywide engagement with this influential 19th century artwork.

PARTNER DESCRIPTION

The HeArt Project creatively links overlooked teenagers in alternative high schools with professional artists, cultural centers, and communities to imagine, produce and present new work. The HeArt Project operates on a “conceptual ladder” philosophy, offering teenagers who have dropped out, been expelled, incarcerated, and/or are teen parents the opportunity to advance through three levels of programming – Arts Workshops and Public Presentations, After-School Residencies and Leadership Training, and Summer Scholarships.
