The Life of Richard Wagner, released in 1913, is a unique motion picture which combines the talents of three extraordinary men: producer Oskar Messter, director Carl Froelich and composer Giuseppe Becce (who also plays the role of Wagner in the film). This rarely screened film is one of the earliest (if not the very earliest) feature-length bio-pics ever produced. A film of extraordinary scope and quality for the period, it follows the life story of the great composer from his childhood, through his tempestuous romances and his friendship with Ludwig of Bavaria, to the creative summit of his later career, Parsifal and The Ring Cycle.
One of the most ambitious films of its time, The Life of Richard Wagner has been digitally restored for contemporary audiences, with new English-language titles prepared by HansJorg Schmidt and Paul Fryer, and an orchestral score by the British composer Barry Seaman.
Paul Fryer, who directed the restoration, will introduce this screening.
