EVENT DESCRIPTION

"Myth, Legends, and Cultural Renewal:  Wagner's Sources": an exhibit drawn from LACMA's collection. Myths, legends, and fables form an essential component of cultural renewal. Reinvented and passed on by each generation, they have continued to fascinate artists into the modern era. Many of the operatic works of Richard Wagner are deeply rooted in the German and Nordic traditions of folk tales and legends, and his monumental Ring cycle drew upon the Edda and Nibelungenlied, which was codified as an epic poem in the High Middles Ages and revived in the 18th century. Similarly, Goethe drew upon German folklore for his description of the Walpurgisnacht and the Brothers Grimm drew upon folk traditions in their retelling of popular fairy tales. Integrated into the awakening of German nationalism in the 19th century, these traditions continued to fascinate various authors and artists into the high modernism of the early 20th century. This exhibition explores Germanic myths and legends in various embodiments in the modern era.
