WELCOME TO THE OFFICIAL
RING FESTIVAL LA E-NEWSLETTER

Barry Sanders We are mid-way through Ring Festival LA. So much has happened. Full houses have enjoyed programs like USC's Thornton School's West Coast premiere of Das Liebesverbot; Daedelus at the Broad Stage; and the Verdi Chorus concert of Wagner and Verdi in Santa Monica. Animated discussions have taken place at colleges and universities from La Verne to Eagle Rock. Clayton Campbell's Digital Wagner opened at the 18th Street Arts Center and the first two of California Art Club's exhibitions opened downtown.

James Conlon, Los Angeles Opera's Richard Seaver Music Director, has been all over town speaking to crowds in museums, libraries, and educational institutions. The Operetta Foundation's Wagner and Operetta: An Unlikely Pairing brought an interested audience to the Beverly Hills Library for a lively evening of music and discussion. LA Opera's tour of German Opera Tales engaged families at many County of Los Angeles Libraries for a first hilarious taste of opera.

Three Big Weekends in May Three Big Weekends in May

In the world of sports the first weekend in May is marked by the run for the roses. In Los Angeles, the last three weekends in May bring together some of the most exciting events of Ring Festival LA with the much anticipated opening of LA Opera's first-ever full production of Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen on May 29. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences got the weekend rolling May 14 when it hosted an evening of animated short subjects with soundtracks influenced by Wagner including The Rabbit of Seville, Musicland and What's Up Opera Doc?.

On Saturday morning May 15 the Santa Monica Museum of Art opened its Park Studio Ring exhibition at Bergamont Station. The exhibition features bronze sculptures made by students who studied under artist Gordon Bowen at his Arts Re-Foundry Atelier, where they created works in bronze inspired by Wagner's Ring. Next up at the Mid-Valley Library is LA Library's presentation of We Tell Stories' Ring-inspired play for children: Rhine's Gold.

Ring Seminars for Life-long Learners New Partners, Events, and Exhibition Extensions

When Ring Festival LA was announced there were 50 partner institutions invested in the idea. When we launched the festival in mid-April there were more than 115 organizations participating. Since then, the Los Angeles Pierce Symphonic Winds has joined into partnership, as has the LA Film Festival, which has added Ring-inspired programming to its June 29 schedule. We want to welcome them to this great collaborative venture.

Several groups have been so motivated by Ring Festival LA that they've added programming to their agendas. Jacaranda: music at the edge added an educational component to its programming; a free one-hour concert for youth, parents and educators to introduce Richard Wagner's Ring cycle through a performance conversation centered on the Siegfried Idyll. The Norton Simon Museum added a discussion "Wagner: Seen and Heard," with Michael Hackett, Professor and Chair, Department of Theater, UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. REDCAT presented Considerng Wagner a Ring- inspired evening of film, music and discussion. The Italian Cultural Institute has extended the run of its exhibition MARIA CALLAS: A Woman, A Voice, A Myth, through June 30, 2010.
